Hydrogen fuel cells convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The direct outputs are electricity, heat, and water, so there are no combustion byproducts. Because there is no burning of fuel at the device, emissions like CO2, NOx, or particulates are essentially eliminated at the point of use. This makes hydrogen fuel cells a clean energy option for vehicles and power generation, especially where air quality and pollution are concerns. The overall environmental impact also depends on how the hydrogen is produced, since cleaner production methods lead to a cleaner overall system. While some fuel-cell designs use catalysts that involve precious metals, that doesn’t define the main advantage of the technology.
